If the average American recycled all their paper, they would save 5 trees every year.
WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL
When you throw something away, where do you think it goes? Every year, Americans produce 250 million tons of garbage, a number that has increased almost 3x since the 1960’s. Back then, only 6% of trash was recycled. Today that rate has grown to about 35%, which is great, but we can certainly do better! Smart choices like picking products that are packaged in recyclable containers, or bringing your own shopping bag can go a long way towards helping the problem. Participating in your city’s recycling programs not only helps the environment, but it also creates jobs and reduces taxes, because recycling
is cheaper than shipping trash to a landfill.
Besides the monetary gains, there are many other less apparent benefits to recycling. For instance, did you ever think about how much fuel is used to extract new resources like wood and metal? In 2011, recycling offset 34 million passenger vehicles worth of greenhouse gas emissions -that’s roughly 15% of all cars on the road in the US. Landfills also leach toxins into the ground and get into the water supply. This month, do your part by selecting one of our three great CharitySub partners who are making a big impact for the recycling cause.
