Adolescent girls are more afraid of gaining weight than getting cancer, losing their parents or nuclear war.
WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT
Low self-esteem in young people is a serious issue that can lead to eating disorders, drug use, early sexual activity, and suicidal thoughts. Body image is closely associated with self-esteem. How we compare ourselves to a perceived ideal is fundamentally important, but how do we form these ideals? Studies show that TV and advertisements have a significant influence and provide context for young people to learn about body ideals. In fact, one study of adolescents showed a correlation between time spent watching TV and body dissatisfaction. Low self esteem is considered a prerequisite that can lead to
eating disorders. And, with only 10% of people who develop an eating disorder seeking treatment, it’s no surprise that Anorexia is one of the deadliest mental illnesses.
Our challenge is to help youth associate personal identity with core values, intelligence, and personality, instead of with their physical appearance. This month at CharitySub, we want to use our donations to promote healthy body ideals. We are partnering with three great organizations who are inspiring developing girls, changing mass media’s portrayal of women, and funding life saving treatment for people with eating disorders.
